A baby is found floating in a cello case in the middle of the English Channel following a shipwreck. The baby, Sophie, is plucked from the cold sea by Charles, a fellow survivor. Charles becomes her guardian and brings up Sophie to be a free-spirit and somewhat of a ‘tomboy’ with a penchant for Shakespeare and a strong belief that anything is possible.
The pair flee to Paris when the authorities threaten to send Sophie to an orphanage – Sophie begins a search for her mother: her only clue is the address of the cello maker.
The adventures begin when Sophie evades the French authorities with the help of Matteo, a street urchin, and his network of ‘Rooftoppers,’ in the search for her mother.
