Subitising is introduced in the Early Learning Goals to help children develop their number sense. By writing numbers on wooden pegs for the children to indicate how many baubles are on each Christmas tree, children are given the opportunity to quickly comprehend quantities, visualise number patterns and develop their oracy skills through the application of mathematical vocabulary.
