It is 1939, William Beech, a young boy from Deptford in London arrives at the home Tom Oakley as an evacuee. Tom is a curmudgeonly widower in his sixties who lives in the village of Little Weirwold. Tom is a sickly little boy following years of poor treatment from his mother. As the story progresses, the two of them become firm friends and their relationship begins to blossom.
